Sex In The City – Ukraine

With over 60,000 prostitutes, 2,500 street children, and a third of the population in poverty, has Ukraine emerged from the former Soviet Union to become the illicit sex tourism capital of Europe?

During the global financial crisis Ukraine suffered badly. In fact, last year it was among the world's worst economic performers. As if that's not enough, it's now taken on the dubious mantle of the sex capital of Europe. Its becoming a hub for child pornography: "they bring in not just women, but 13 or 14-year-old girls - that happens all the time", - says hotel security man Sergey. Despite the best efforts of anti-sex-tourism groups such as FEMEN, the illicit industry seems to have become unstoppable and is consuming its poorest citizens by the day. "If prostitutes and their pimps were punished harshly, half of them would think twice", - says local, Denis.
